Genocide in Darfur

The Darfur genocide has killed more than 400,000 civilians and displaced 2.5 million people from their homes. About the size of Texas, the Darfur region of Sudan is home to racially mixed Muslim tribes. In February 2003, frustrated by poverty and neglect, two Darfurian rebel groups launched an uprising against the Khartoum government. The government responded with a scorched-earth campaign, arming and bankrolling militias against the innocent civilians of Darfur. A small peacekeeping force run by the African Union is in place, but it is largely unsupported by the rest of the world. Civilian protection is desperately needed to stop the violence and end the genocide.

The Genocide Intervention Network envisions a world in which the global community is willing and able to protect civilians from genocide and mass atrocities. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. While our primary focus is on the Darfur genocide, our larger goal is to help build a permanent anti-genocide constituency that transforms “Never Again” from a promise we make into a commitment we keep.

STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition is an umbrella organization of over 600 high school and college chapters dedicated to putting an end to genocide, specifically the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan. STAND formed out of the rapidly growing student movement to protect Darfur and works to unify this anti-genocide movement under one message by providing students with informational, educational and organizing resources, empowering them through an extensive network of impassioned student activists and advocating for a change in the world’s mentality towards genocide.

As the coordinating entity for the Sudan divestment movement, the Sudan Divestment Task Force is actively involved in dozens of successful and developing targeted Sudan divestment campaigns around the world at the university, city, state and national levels. SDTF has developed a unique approach to shareholder engagement and divestment, focusing its efforts on the most egregiously offending companies in Sudan. This “targeted divestment” helps maximize impact on the Sudanese government while minimizing potential harm to both innocent Sudanese civilians and investment returns.

  • Save Darfur Coalition: An alliance of over 170 faith-based, advocacy and humanitarian organizations. The coalition's member organizations represent 130 million people of all ages, races, religions and political affiliations united together to help the people of Darfur.
  • Enough: Our mission is to stop and prevent genocide and mass atrocities — everywhere and forever — by promoting peace, providing protection, and punishing the perpetrators. We use field and policy analysis and strong policy advocacy to empower a growing activist movement for change.
  • Africa Action: The Campaign to Stop Genocide in Darfur is calling on President Bush to assert U.S. leadership in support of a multinational intervention to stop the ongoing violence.
  • Friends Committee on National Legislation: The largest peace lobby in Washington, DC. Founded in 1943 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), FCNL staff and volunteers work with a nationwide network of tens of thousands of people from many different races, religions, and cultures to advocate social and economic justice, peace, and good government.
  • Amnesty International: Amnesty International is calling on the UN Security Council to urgently deploy a strong UN mission in Darfur, authorized to use force to protect civilians.
  • Darfur Advocacy Fund: The ongoing Darfur Genocide is no accident, no local tribal conflict. The genocide is the brutal plan of three men in the Sudanese national government, yet our governments continue to cut deals with them. It is time for the US and European governments to stop appeasing genocide. We call on our governments to fully support the International Criminal Court to indict the perpetrators of genocide, and to help ensure their arrest. It is time for justice, because only justice can bring peace.
  • International Crisis Group: The International Crisis Group is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, with some 130 staff members on five continents, working through field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict. ICG's approach is grounded in field research, including in Darfur.
  • Human Rights Watch: Working to document and end human rights abuses in Darfur.
  • Protect Darfur: The Aegis Trust (UK) lobbies governments to take effective action to prevent further attacks and seek practical solutions to rebuild lives.
  • Physicians for Human Rights: PHR's Darfur Survival Campaign mobilizes health professionals, students, and members of the public to press for urgently needed security in Darfur, Sudan, including augmented African Union troops and a UN peacekeeping force of 20,000, as authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 1706. In addition, the campaign insists on compensation and restitution for survivors.
  • US Holocaust Memorial Museum: The Committee on Conscience works to ensure that no such an inhuman assault as the Holocaust or anything like it ever recurs. The committee issues "genocide alerts" for situations around the world with the potential for becoming mass atrocities.
  • Eric Reeves: Dr. Reeves has spent the past nine years working full-time as a Sudan researcher and analyst, publishing extensively both in the US and internationally. He has testified several times before the Congress, has lectured widely in academic settings, and has served as a consultant to a number of human rights and humanitarian organizations operating in Sudan.
  • Mia Farrow: A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Mia and her son Ronan Farrow have traveled to refugee camps in Darfur and Chad, and raise awareness through presentations, photo galleries and essays.
  • Brian Steidle: A retired U.S. Marine, Brian Steidle was a member of the African Union team monitoring the conflict in Darfur, where he took hundreds of photographs documenting atrocities.
  • OurPledge.org: Americans Against the Darfur Genocide is a grassroots coalition of ordinary citizens, human rights groups, and faith communities. Our purpose is to help stop the genocide in Darfur, by helping to bring NATO and UN protection to the people of that region.
  • Darfur Peace and Development: Seeks to restore reconciliation where conflict exists in the Darfur region of Sudan through humanitarian aid and services to the needy people in the region, without regard to race, religion, sex or national origin.
  • Darfur Rehabilitation Project: Works to inform the American public about the extensive violations of human rights that have been and continue to occur in the Darfur region of western Sudan; unify the voice of Darfurians everywhere in order to bring increased international attention to the ongoing crimes against humanity in the region; advocate justice for the victims; promote conflict resolution; and foster the advancement of all people of the region through education, advocacy, direct services and research.
  • Sudan Organization Against Torture: Founded in 1993, SOAT's primary objective is preventing torture and challenging impunity. SOAT works to rehabilitate Sudanese survivors of torture; provides legal assistance to survivors and individuals threatened with inhumane and degrading punishments; and researches, documents and campaigns against human rights abuses in Sudan on a national and international level.
